Phillip II the king of Spain was born in Valladolid, Spain. He was son of Holy roman emperor Charles V and Isabella of Portugal.

On September 12th he was married to his first wife Maria Manuela. He had a son named Carlos and he was born in July. His wife then died for giving birth and complications.

On September 23rd 1559 the Escorial began construction. It is near Madrid close to central Spain. It is located in San Lorenzo de El Escorial.

After he married his third wife she died in 1568 then he went on to marry his fourth wife, Anna of Austria

The Dutch Revolt was a fight between the Spanish and the Dutch. They were both really different. Spanish was Catholic while the Netherlands had many Calvinist congregations. Netherlands declared their independence from Spain.

Not only did Phillip rule Spain but in 1581 he also began to rule Portugal.

Phillip II died in of Cancer on September 13, 1598 at the Escorial.
