The setting of the story is in Klondike, Yukon in Canada during the very cold month of January. The main character is hiking a trail of thirty miles alone. -

The main character, Tom Vincent, was a "strapping young fellow, big-boned and big-muscled, with faith in himself and in the strength of his head and hands." -

The rising action begins when Tom Vincent gets hungry so he removes his mitten to eat a biscuit then suddenly his hand becomes very cold and it begins to numb. -

Once Tom realizes that he cannot warm himself up, he decides to take a run to warm up again and then stops to continue to eat. -
Climax
The climax is when the character attempts to cross a creek but he falls in and is sticken with cold water. -

In the falling action, the character attempts to a build a fire but fails at his first couple of attempts. -

Tom, then, takes off his gloves and finally lights a fire. -
