    Mawi's father was born in Eritrea in 1934. His father died after he was born and his mother was very ill so he was sent to live in a monastery.

    After spending 9 years in a monastery Mawi's father went to live with a relative that would beat him and almost kill him. He left to find a wealthy uncle in Ethiopia.
