The Start of an Amazing Life
Noam Chomsky is an American born man raised with a Jewish family and religion. He was in an experimental elementary school that encouraged self-directed teaching for its students. This helped showcase his intelligence from an early age. In his early teens he ventured from Philadelphia to New York to engage in scholarly discussions with "a thriving working-class Jewish intellectual community," (McGilvray, 3). -
All About Linguistics
"Considered the founder of modern linguistics, Noam Chomsky is one of the most cited scholars in modern history," (About Noam Chomsky, 1). Although he encountered many disagreements in regards to linguistics, Chomsky carried on with his life. "In 1949, Chomsky married educational specialist Carol Schatz," having a companion encouraged him to continue pursuing his beliefs regardless of what his peers thought (Biography.com Editors, 7). -
Political Beliefs
From an early age Noam Chomsky held firm political beliefs in libertarian socialism. In his later life he began to relate his political beliefs to his linguistic studies. He calls this an abstract connection, though, because "a close connection would have to be based on a fully developed science of human nature, through which fundamental human needs could be identified or deduced. But there is nothing like such a science," (McGilvray, 27). -
His Attempt to Help
"As a responsible (rather than mercenary) member of the intellectual class, Chomsky believes that it is his obligation to provide ordinary citizens with the information they needed to draw their own conclusions and to make their own decisions about vital political and economic issues," (McGilvray, 30). In his work Power and Prospects (1996) he further discusses his obligation to the citizens.
