The Nation of Islam represented a major piece of the civil rights movement. Their main ideology was fighting fire with fire when it came to racism and injustices being done against them. Malcolm didn't want integration, he wanted separation. -

Malcolm X went to Hajj and that was one of the biggest turning points in the history of the NOI. Malcolm X saw true Islam for what it really was and realized the agenda he was pushing was only a corrupted version that was used to divide the people. -
Malcom cuts ties the the NATION OF ISLAM
After coming back from Hajj, Malcolm decides to push a different agenda than he did before. He decides to preach the real Islam. He told the people of how he and a white man with blonde hair and blue eyes shared the same cup and same living space while he was visiting. This was unlike his previous speeches. He was going against the Nation of Islams agenda blatantly. He was silenced and then later cut ties. -
Malcolm X is Assasinated
Malcolm X is assassinated in the Audubon Ballroom. A portion of people from the NOI were taken with him and his new agenda and message of Islam. The NOI were not so happy about that so they hired one of their people to carry out the assasination. -
Elijah Muhammed Dies and Nation of Islam dies off
On February 25 of 1975, Elijah Muhammed died of Heart Failure. The Nation of Islam slowly dies off as the people chose a new Minister. -
Warith Deen Muhammed Shifts NOI to Sunni Islam
Warith Deen Muhammed was chosen by the people to be the new minister in place of his father. Muhammed attempted to shift the NOI into Sunni Islam to rid of his fathers radical teachings and view points on other races. -
Louis Farrakhan Breakaway Group
Louis Farrakhan did not agree with Warith Deen Muhammed on his Sunni Muslim shift and ended up preserving the teachings and viewpoints of Elijah Muhammed to make a breakaway group also called the Nation of Islam. This means he was not the successor of the Nation of Islam. -
Million Man March
Farrakhan led the million man march in October 15 1995 to promote black unity and values in the black community. One million people attended and it was held in Washington D.C.. This March sparked the interests of many people and they were willing to join. -
Modern Day Nation of Islam (2001 - present-day)
The Nation of Islam now has 25,000 members. Most people that were previously involved in the group shifted away to Sunni Islam which is the Orthodox Islam. The NOI is a minority group now. The main focus of the group now is economics, capitalism, debates, health care and government systems.
