James launched his YouTube channel, focusing on makeup on December 1, 2015. On October 11, 2016, at the age of seventeen, he became the first male spokesmodel for cosmetics brand CoverGirl, working alongside brand ambassador Katy Perry. -
James Charles Africa Scandal
In February 2017, when Charles was 17 he was criticized after tweeting a joke considered offensive about Africa and Ebola. He later issued an apology saying, "I am extremely sorry for what I said. There are no excuses. No one owes me forgiveness, but I've learned a lot from the experience. I hope that the people who might look up to me will be able to learn from my mistakes and not repeat them". This resulted into James losing many subscribers on his youtube channel. -
Education
James attended Bethlehem central high school, and in middle school James came out as gay when he was 12 years old, and graduated from the same school in 2017. -
After graduation
A month later, James was exposed when another YouTube make up artist named Thomas Halbert posted screenshots of previous conversations online with him where his rise to fame story was falsified. He claimed that his high school prom photographs were retaken with a ring light. However, it was revealed that they were actually edited which led the photographer being contacted.

James not being fully gay
In April 2019, Charles said that he was not fully gay, he said "There have been girls in the past who I've thought were very, very beautiful. There's also been trans guys in the past, too, that I was really, really into for a moment in time". Some of his viewers thought that this comment was very transphobic. Charles apologized releasing a statement saying that his comments were unintentionally transphobic. -
Sister tour
When James announced that he'd be going on a US-wide tour to meet subscribers, his fans were delighted. However, he was quick to receive backlash when the ticket prices where revealed. Many fans claimed that the pricing of his tour tickets which range from $52.50-$500, seemed like a lot for his fans who are young teens. He later on apologized to his fans. -
James and Tati scandal
If you need a quick recap, Westbrook recently released a viral video calling out her former friend over some allegedly suspect behavior, in addition to posting an ad for Sugar Bear Hair, which is a huge competitor of her company, Halo Beauty. The scandal has cost Charles over three million YouTube subscribers so far. -
