Ian Hacking(1936- Present)- Contribution to Philosophy of Science
Dr. Hacking contributed to the Philosophy of Science immensely with- in many different sciences. He is widely known for his lectures and books that covered Sociology. In Ian's book "The Taming of Chance (1990)", he wrote about many of societies issues and why they happened. Ian's dedication the the pursuit of knowledge in Physical and Social Sciences have helped further our view in Philosophy of Science -
Ian Hacking(1936- Present)- Education 1936-2002
Ian grew up in Vancouver, BC where he studied Mathematics and physics at the university of Columbia. He earned his BA in Mathematics and physics from there. Shortly after he joined the University of Cambridge where he earned his BA, MA, and Ph. D in Moral Sciences. After receiving these degrees, he returned to Canada in 1982 where he worked for the University of Toronto's institute for Philosophy of science. He then traveled around and lectured. -

The Killam Prize is one of the most prestigious awards to receive in Canada. In order to Receive this prize, One must show great Career achievement in the following Category: engineering, natural sciences, health sciences, the humanities and social sciences. Dr. hackling received $100,000 dollars and the Killam prize in Humanities. -
Ian Hacking(1936- Present)- Gold medal for Achievement in Research
This is Dr. Hacking's more prestigious Accomplishments because he was the first anglophone (English Speaker) to receive this award. He was interviewed after this award and he explains that he would have had a very different life if he did not pursue Cambridge after his undergraduate degree in the University of British Columbia. The only reason he went to Cambridge is because he received a scholarship. This changed his life because he wouldn't have been able to afford it. -

the most recent accomplishment by Dr. Hacking and is the most important when it comes to the Philosophy of Science. The Award Stated the following: "For his fundamental and pioneering contributions to philosophy and the history of social and natural sciences, for the thematic breadth of his research, for his original epistemological perspective centered on a version of scientific realism and defined in contrast with the dominant paradigm in the philosophy of science of the twentieth century." -
Ian Hacking(1936- Present)- Balzan Prize- Part 2
This Award was given to Hacking because he is one of the respected philosophers of natural and social sciences in our century. Dr. Hacking wrote many books that were mentioned in the prize description, but "The Emergence of Probability (1975) and and The Taming of Chance (1990)" related the closest with this weeks topic in Philosophy. This book explains the objective and subjective nature aspect in the 17th century and how it has changed in the 19th century. -
