Works by Berlioz
After he entered the Conservatoire, where he studied composition under Reicha and Lesueur Berlioz made his first important composition which was "Les Francs-Juges." Another one was "Épisode de la vie d'un artiste" which was about his perservering courtship to the talented Irish actress Henrietta Smithson. On a stay in Italy Berlioz composed an overture to King Lear, and Le Retour à la vie. His other work Sardanapalus got him the 1st prize for foreign travel (1830) -
Berlioz's First Wife.
Berlioz first saw Harriet Smithson in September, 1827 at the Théâtre de l’Odéon playing in Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet, in the roles of Ophelia and Juliet. They got married at the British Embassy in Paris in October 3, 1833. They separated on 1844. -
Berlioz's Son.
He had a son by Harriet named Louis-Thomas Berlioz after his grandfather Louis Berlioz. He was born on August 14,1834 and he died on June 5, 1867 of yellow fever. -

Berlioz's Second Wife
Berlioz's second wife was Marie-Geneviève Martin, alias Marie Recio.Berlioz and Marie married on 19 October 1854 in the Trinity Church in Paris. Berlioz wrote to his son Louis at the time that it was his duty to do so. Miss Racio, a singer, had been his mistress for over a decade. Marie died in 1862. Both Marie and Harriet are buried with Berlioz at the Montmartre Cemetery. -
Berlioz's date of Death
In January 1869, Berlioz took to bed sick and died in March. A square in Paris now bears his name with a statue that overlooks it. -
