Mildred overdoses on pills
Guy Montag notices that Mildred overdosed on pills and immediately calls emergency. The two men replace his wife's toxic blood. He is disappointed that they are not qualified medical professionals. -
Guy Montag meets Clarisse McClellan
Clarisse describes herself as "crazy". She tells Guy that she is not scared of firefighters and that in the past firefighters used to put out fires and Guy responds with a chuckle. Clarisse asks Guy if he is happy and he ponders over her question as he enters his home. -
The Mechanical Hound threatens Guy
When Guy enters the firehouse, the Mechanical Hound threatens him. He tells his captain, Beatty, about this encounter but his captain assures him that there is nothing to be afraid of. -
Clarisse disappears
One day, Guy does not see Clarisse waiting for him and suspects that something is wrong. Later he finds out that she was killed in an automobile accident and that her family, including her uncle, has moved away. -
Guy steals a book
As Guy burns the old woman's collection of books, he takes one and hides it in his coat. This is a turning point in the story because it shows that he is unlike the other firefighters. He remembers what Clarisse told him about the past and wonders if there is anything to gain from reading books. -
Beatty visits Guy
When Guy does not show up to work, Beatty comes over and tells him about the history of books. Beatty firmly asserts that books are pointless because they contain contradicting stories about dead people, who are irrelevant. Montag vowes to quit his job. -
Guy shows Mildred his collection of books
After the captain leaves, Guy shows his wife all the books he has collected in the ventilator grill. Mildred panics and is clearly not interested in reading. -
Guy meets with Faber
Guy decides that he needs a teacher to explain the books to him. He recalls meeting Faber and calls him up. Sensing that Faber is reluctant to talk on the phone, Guy visits Faber at his house to discuss the purpose behind books. Faber gives a two way radio earpiece to Guy so he can listen in on Guy's conversations. -
The firemen arrive in front of Montag's house
After listening to the captain's confusing lines from literature, an alarm sounds and the captain drives to the address printed on the report. They stop in front of Guy's house and see Mildred climbing into a taxi. Beatty orders Guy to burn everything down. This serves as the climax of the novel. -
Guy burns Beatty and the Mechanical Hound
In the spur of the moment, Guy kills the captain. Before he kills the Mechanical Hound, it injects a fluid into one of his legs. After this, Guy wanders the streets as the police search for him. -
Guy runs to Faber's house
Faber tells Guy to head towards the river. Faber gives him a suitcase full of clothes so he can mask his odor from the new Mechanical Hound that is tracking him down. -
Guy meets the intellectuals
Guy meets Granger and the other professors who tell him about leaving a mark after their death. Granger tells Guy that one day books will come back but for now, their goal is to pass down the stories to younger generations.
