The Beginning of a Physicist and Philosopher
Ernst Waldfried Josef Wenzel Mach was born in Chirlitz, Brno, Czech Republic where he was home schooled by his parents until he reached the age of fifteen. He then began his studies at a Gymnasium in Kremsier. In 1855, Ernst commenced his studies at the University of Vienna where he expanded his knowledge in mathematics, physics and philosophy. Receiving his doctorate in physics, five years later thanks to his thesis on "Electrical charge and Induction". REFERENCE:

    From Student to Professor
While still at the University of Vienna Ernst taught mathematics and physics but it was here where he studied on acoustics and the Doppler Effect in optic. This original theory was made by Christian Doppler in 1842 but it was Ernst Mach that proved that the Doppler Effect was real for sound during his career path. Ernst was a man whom had the ability to design precise measuring devices and was exceptional as a experimenter. Due to his abilities he became a professor of mathematics in Austria.
  • Mach's Principle

    Mach's Principle
Ernst ia well known for one of his best ideas involving the physical origin of inertia. This is called Mach's Priniciple which explains the phenomenon of how all masses in the universe are connected. Albert Einstein believed that Mach's inertial theory was born from his theories on relativity. Mach established the principles of supersonics and the ratio of the velocity of the object to the velocity of sound. Video on Mach Principle.

Ernst didn't marry until 1867 and had five children. Although Mach suffered a stroke in 1897 and it paralyzed the right side of his body he continued to teach at the University of Vienna. Soon after he retired from the university but even through he had retired he continued his passion by writing and corresponding. On 1913, Mach moved to one of his sons house in Vaterstetten, Munich and died one day after his 73rd birthday, Feb. 19th, 1916. After so many years he has lived on through his work.
