  • Birth and childhood

    Ernest Nagel was born on November 16, 1901, in Austria-Hungary. He and his family later migrated to the United States when he was about ten years old. Nagel became a US citizen at the age of nineteen.
  • Early years (college)

    In 1923, Nagel earned his BS at the City College of New York City. He later went on to earn his Ph.D. at Columbia University in 1930. He also became a Philosophy Professor at Columbia University from 1931-1970.
  • Marriage

    Ernest Nagel married Edith Haggstorm in 1935. They, later on, had two children together.
  • Career later in life

    Nagel became John Dewey professor of philosophy at Columbia University in 1955. In 1967 he achieved the most distinguished academic rank, University Professor, and in 1970, became Professor Emeritus.
