At the age of twelve, Davy Crockett was hired to herd cattle for a man named Jacob Siler, in Rockbridge County, Virginia. Siler tried to keep Davy for more than he promised. But, he escaped at night. He walked seven miles in two hours through knee-deep snow. He eventually made it home in late 1798 or early 1799. -
