School
Ned Begay went to school where he learned to speak English. He was the first person in his family to go to school. -
Graduating
Ned graduated from high school at the top of his class. After graduating he wanted to join the marines, but his parents made him wait a year. -
The Marines
Ned waited a year then he signed up for the marines. He was then sent to boot camp where he was taught basic training. -
Code School
After Ned graduated from boot camp he went to Camp Elliott. There he learned to use his knowledge of Navajo and English to learn to be a code talker. -
Learning the Code
The other Navajos and Ned continuously practiced the code to the point it was perfect. -
Hawaii
Ned and the other code talkers went to Hawaii where they trained with other code talkers that had experienced war. -
Bougainville
The marines were sent to the small island. In the morning the went onto the beaches and started attacking the Japanese.After defeating the enemy the set up a base and an airfield. -
Back to Hawaii
The code talkers from Bougainville went back to Hawaii where they learned advancements in the code. -
The Marianas Islands
The code talkers came back from Hawaii and were immediately sent back out again for their new destination which was the Marianas Islands. -
Battles
The marines moved from island to island defeating the Japanese and moving closer to Japan. The code talkers were very key in these battles because they could be delivering messages without the enemy knowing. -
Iwo Jima
After the marines beat the enemy on Iwo Jima and took the mountain on it. They got ready to head towards Japan so they could finish this bloody war. -
Bombs
The US decided to drop two atomic bombs on Japan. The destruction that these bombs caused forced Japan to surrender. -
Home
After the war Ned went home and lived with his family. He wasn't allowed to talk about his job as a code talker until 1969.
