Jonas attends the Ceremony of Twelve where he will get his Assignment. At the ceremony, Jonas is selected to be the next Receiver of Memory. -

First Day of Training
On Jonas's first day of training, he realizes that the Receiver's home is strange and different from the rest of the community. The doors have locks, his home has walls of books, and the furniture is very decorative and ornate. -
Jonas's First Memory
While at his first day of training, Jonas learns what it means to be the "receiver of memory." The Giver places his hands on Jonas's bare back and transmits a memory of sledding downhill on a snowy day. Jonas experiences cold, hills, and sleds for the first time. -
Seeing Beyond
Jonas starts to understand that he is able to "see beyond." He has the ability to see color, unlike any other members of his community. The first color he sees is red - like the apple he was tossing with Asher and Fiona's hair.
