    Born in Florence Italy on 5/3/1469. At this time, Italy was divided into 4 rival city states. He then became a diplomat for 14 years. There was a temporary fall in the Medici family at this time. In 1498, he became secretary of the Ten, until 1512.

    From misinterpretation and misunderstanding, his work were said to be "almost diabolical". His most violent assailent is the clergy at this time. His book "The Prince" became famous in 1532, after his death, but his other works much later, in 1782. He has become reknown as the founder of political science that period on. He wrote many state papers and letter also.

    He held this post until the fall of the republic in 1512. "He was employed in many missions, such as one to the Emperor Maximilian, and four to France." He caused his patron Soderini's downfall when the Medici regained power. Arrested in 1513, charged of conspiracy, and put to torture.

    A Florentine diplomat, he was imprisoned briefly by the Medici when they regained power (1512). After his release he turned to writing. His family regained power at this time. Served as Florentine diplomat for 17 years before briefly prisoned. He earned a devious reputation at this time.

    Wrote the Prince
    His best-known novel, The Prince (1517), contains Machiavelli’s thoughts on the methods by which a prince may acquire and make use of political power. It served as a handbook for politicians on use of ruthlessness, and self serving needs. From his dark times away from politics, it gave him time to read Roman history and write "The Prince".

    Commissioned by Leo X to "draw up report on the state of Florence" in 1519. He will soon be employed in the diplomatic service and historiographer. Soon Italy will be faced with advancing forces of Emperor Charles V, and he averted Florence from the army to Rome.

    He resided in a small village outside of Florence, and died in the city. His resting place is in the church which he had been banned from before. Now he is recognized as the "father of modern political theroy". He lived to be 58. Wrote several poems and plays before dying in Florence, Italy.
