Tourism
After 17 years, the first offical road, with a 30 cent toll, was completed. By 1878, the Narrow Gauge Line to Philadelphia was constructed because one railraod couldn't handle all the passangers. From 1853-1902, the Belloe House was the first commerical hotel. The United States Hotel took up a full city block. -

Enoch Lewis "Nucky" Johnson was born to Smith E. and Virginia Johnson. -
Sheriff of Atlantic CIty
Nucky was elected as sheriff in 1886. He was sheriff and under-sheriff until 1917. -
Prohibiton
Prohibiton goes into effect but is not enforced in Atlantic City. During this era, Nucky's power grew to the max. Nucky's income came from liquor, gambling, and prostitution. -

Atlantic City Convention Hall
In 1926, Johnson directed the contrustion of Atlantic City Convention Hall and it opened in May 1929. -
Importing Liquor
Johnson agreed to partcipat in a loose organization to import liquor. This group became known as the Big Seven or Seven Group. -
Atlantic City Conference
Johnson hosted this conference in 1929 wiyh national organizewd crime leaders. -
Evading taxes
On May 10, 1933, Johnson was indicted for evading taxes during 1935-1937. -
Trial
His two week trial concluded in July 1941 and he was convicted. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined. -
Parole and Prision Release
After four years, he was paroled and did not have to pay his fine. When he was released, he went to live with his wife, whom he married in 1941, and brother. -
Death
Johnson dies at the Atlantic County Convalescent Home.
