While the future was looking dark for their mother, Ariane and Alexander sat and watched the launch of the first German into space. Alexander, still very young attempts to zone out his mother yelling and focus on Sigmund Jähn. -
Pioneer Summer Camp
From then on out, the Kerner's became devoted to their country thanks to their mom. In the summer of 1979, the children took part in a communist tradition, a Pioneer camp for youth. Their time at the camp was filled with activities, such as carnivals and parades (http://www.histclo.com/youth/youth/org/pio/pioneerg.htm). -
Violently Detained
Later on in the protest, the military violently breaks up the protest. Alex tries to flee, but he is grabbed and beaten by undercover military men. Before being taking to the police vehicle, he spots his mother and once she sees him, she can’t stand the stress and collapses. -
A National Holiday: No Work
Since it was the 40th anniversary of the GDR, Alexander had the day off from his job as a repair man. In honor of this great day, he attends a historical protest AGAINST the GDR. At the protest they chanted "Freedom of the Press!" During the night he also encounters his future love, Lara. -

Loving Lara
With his mother in a comma for more than 5 months, he frequently sees Lara in the hospital, and his love for her grows. -
Fired and happy
In mid-April, the TV repair shop where he worked was shut down, but this does not seem like an issue to him. Right after announcing his jobless, he says, "Things finally started looking up" (film, 22:25). And quickly gets a new job as a cable practitioner, and makes his new best friend. -

Finally, Lara and Alex go on a first date! -

After over 10 years of not seeing or talking to his father, he finally finds him and their relationship is restored. -

After all his efforts to prevent her from being stressed, the mother passes away two days before what would have been the GDR's 41st anniversary. Never realizing she knew the truth, he hopes he made her last few months were enjoyable.
