    Luther and Maud Powell gave birth to Colin Powell. He was born in Harlem, New York. This was the start of a great life and a great man.

    A Little Bit of Help

    Both of Colin's parents showed love and respect for him but the biggest impact they had on him was stressing the importance of learning to him. Even though they didnt go to high-school themselves they helped him through it. Also they encouraged him too go to college.

    Colin went to to college at the City College of New York. He enrolled in the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) program. he earned A's and graduated at the top of his class. He was so good that he put racial descriminations in the Army to rest. Powell graduated in 1958.

    Despite being a war hero, Colin Powell was given the same treatment as a regular black male. One time while stationed in Fort Benning, Georgia. He went to a resturaunt and was denied a hamburger because of his skin color.

    Powell left his new wife to fight in the Vietnam war. His first son was born during this time. He recieved a bronze medal for his service.

    While in Vietnam, Powell was assigned to a unit patrolling the border with Laos. He stepped on a trap and a wooden stake shot through his foot. He left the war and earned a purple heart.

    Colin was selected to be one of seventeen White House Fellows. He was selected out of 1,500 people. He recieved special training to help him in his career.

    He was sent to fight in Korea. He served as Battalion Commander while there. He was called back to the pentagon after a year of fighting.

    Caspar Weinberger brought Powell into office as his assistant. They had lots of sucess together. Weinberger got promoted many times and Powell was brought right up with him. It was a major help in his career.

    Powell was given another chance to fight. This time he was in Germany. He accepted the post of Commanding General of the Fifth Corps. This put him in charge of 72,000 troops.

    Powell was offered another job in office. This time by Frank Carlucci. Powell declined the offer because he liked working directly with troops. Until one day when President Reagan called and asked him to be Frank's assistant. When he returned to D.C. Frank asked him what changed his mind. Powell said as an American service member I will serve my country wherever they need me.

    President Reagan did a wonderful thing to Powell. Powell was raised to the rank of four-star general. He is one of ten men to achieve this rank and the only African American of the bunch.

    Colin Powell has retired from his life of sucess and hard ships. he is currently living in McLean, Virginia. He has aged 75 years and is almost 76.
