It was when the citizens of France decided to overthrow the monarchy to force change upon their country Why it was important: It was important because without this France would have continued to be ruled by the monarchy and would have lived in despair for many more years.

    What is it: The Haitian Revolution has often been described as the largest and most successful slave rebellion in the Western Hemisphere. Why is it important: It is significant because Haiti is the only country where slave freedom was taken by force and was the only successful slave revolt in modern times.

  • Battle of Waterloo

    What it is: The Battle of Waterloo was Napoleon Bonaparte's last battle in which Britain and it's allies defeated Bonaparte's forces, causing him to be exiled. Why it's important: The Battle of Waterloo is important because it paved the way for the U.K. to become a global power by showing how powerful they are. It also marked the end of the French revolution and it therefore made the world safe again for Royal and Imperial rule over the common folk.

    What is it: The British Crown rule was established in India, ending years of control by the East India Company. Why it's important: This event is important because it helped in creating a racial chasm between ordinary Indians and Britons.

    What it was: The theory of evolution was a theory that suggested all life is related and has descended from a common ancestor: the birds and the bananas, the fishes and the flowers. Why it was important: This event was very important has before this theory was formed we had no idea where humans, plants and animals had come from.
  • Union forces defeated Confederates in American Civil War.

    What was it: The American Civil War was a great civil war fought in America. The Union faced secessionists in eleven Southern states known as the Confederate States of America. The Union won the war and it remains as the bloodiest in U.S. history. Why it was important: Every part of American society was fundamentally changed, from the role of the federal government to the status of African-Americans to the art, music and culture of a nation.

    What it was: The unification of Germany into a politically and administratively integrated nation state. Why it was important: It allowed Germany to unite into one and become stronger and more powerful.

  • U.S. took control of Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines.

    The Treaty of Paris, signed by the United States and Spain, officially ended the Spanish-American War. Under the treaty, Spain gave up its claim to Cuba and handed over Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines to the United States. The United States, in turn, paid Spain $20 million for the Philippine Islands.
