The North Africa Campaign
From 1940 to 1943, the Allies and Axis battled in North Africa. The Allied armies trapped the Axis forces. This is important because every battle we won helped our confidence in being able to win the war. -
The Battle of the Atlantic
German submarines entered American coastal waters. The battle was a lot of back and forth of sinking ships and air war. But ultimately new technology in America helped them to win. This is important because it was one of the first battles in World War 2 with new and improved technology. -
The Battle of Stalingrad
The cold Russian winter put a stop to the German advance, which did not resume until the summer of 1942. The red army made its stand at Stalingrad. The Germans began a two month fire bombing campaign. The soviets took an advantage of the harsh winter to launch a counterattack. This is important because the more the Germans lost the more that they couldn't attack. -
The invasion of Italy
U.S. troops under General George S. Patton invaded the island of Sicily with British forces. Italians lost faith in their leader Mussolini and he was overthrown. This is important because it helped get Italy's dictator thrown out of his economic role. -
Battle of the Bulge
Germany launched a counterattack in Belgium and Luxembourg. They pushed back the U.S. First Army forming a bulge in the Allied line. This is important because even though the Allies had set backs we eventually got past them. -
Reaching Berlin
The Allies faced little battles when they were moving toward Berlin. Soviet troops continued fighting their way to Berlin from the east. And the Soviets finally reached Berlin in late April 1945. This is important because this meant that the war was over and the Allies won.
