Helen Keller was Born
Born in Alabama. Her first words were "tea" and "wah-wah" for water. She learned to walk at an early age. -
Helen Loses Hearing and Sight
Helen got very sick and had a very high fever. After she got better, her mom was bathing her and she realized she was blind! There was a bell that called everybody to come to dinner but Helen didn't turn her head to the noise like she use to, then they realized she was deaf! -
Sign Language
By the time she was 5 she had many ways to communicate. She made up her own sign language like she pinched her hand to mean small. Helen also had tantrums because no body could understand her and this made her frustrated. -
Annie Sullivan Arrives!
Annie Sullivan taught her how to talk to others and help her where ever she went so she could help her communicate. -
Helen Goes to Perkins
Helen goes to Boston to go to Perkins School for The Bind with Annie Sullivan. Here, she learns to love poetry. -
Helen Meets the President
Helen and Annie are invited to The White House to meet president Grover Cleveland. The president was amazed by how much Helen could do because people thought that if you were blind and deaf, you were not smart. Helen proved to the president of the United States just how wrong that was. -
Helen Graduates from College
Helen graduates from Radcliffe College. In the early 1900's few woman went to college and no deaf-blind woman had ever completed college. -
Helen writes Books
Helen writes books, "The Story of My Life" in 1094 , "The Wold I live In" in 1908 and "Midstream" in 1929. -
Annie Sullivan Dies
After becoming ill, Annie loses her eyesight and eventually dies. Helen is heartbroken but goes on to work and life a full life. -
Helen Gives Inspiration
Helen travels all over the world, speaking out for the handicap. She meets with blind soldiers, inspiring them and giving them hope. -
Helen Keller Dies
Helen died on June 1, 1968. She was nearly 88. She had inspired millions. Her story continues to inspire us today.
