Helen Keller was born June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama. Helen's parents were named Kate Adams Keller and Colonel Arthur Keller. -
Helen Keller becomes ill
Helen Keller was 19 months old when she became deaf and blind. This was caused by an illness with a very high fever. -
Signs of her own
By the time Helen was 5 she made over 50 signs of her own. "She pulled at her mother or her father. That meant "come with me". She shoved them away when she wanted them to go. For "bread," Helen acted out cutting a slice and buttering it. To say "small," Helen pinched a small bit of the skin of her hand. Helen spread her fingers wide and brought them togeather to mean "large"." -
Annie Sullivan came ...
Annie Sullivan came to help Helen, Annie Sullivan gave Helen a doll she then wrote doll in Helen's hand.
Annie and Helen moved to the cottage.The cottage was next door to the house but they took a longer way to get there and Annie Sullivan moved all the furniture around so Helen wouldn't know that she was so close to home. This would make it easier for Annie Sullivan to teach her. -
Miracle
At the water pump Helen held her mug under the water. Annie pumped out the cold water and spelled "water” in Helen's hand. Helen dropped her mug. A look of wonder filled Helen's face Helen spelled back water many times to Annie. Helen understood that words meant things. -
Helen accepted to Radcliffe College
Helen received a "Certificate of Admission" to Radcliffe College. "Miss Keller passed with credit in advanced Latin." -
Helen graduated from Radcliffe College
Helen was the first deafblind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. -

Helen Keller dies
Helen Keller died June 1, 1968, at her home in Easton, Connecticut.
She was 87. -
