    Partition of India
    The day before independence the British Indian Empire split into what was the Dominion of Pakistan (now the Islamic Republic of Pakistan & the People's Republic of Bangladesh) and the Union of India. The migration that followed as designated religious groups moved to each country was the largest mass migration the world has ever seen - 14 million Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims were displaced. Moreover, retributive genocide the followed claimed the lives of between 500,000 - 1.5 million people.

    August 15th 1947 marks the day that India recieved independence from the British Empire after a long struggle led by the Indian National Congress - The Freedom Struggle is most noted for it's emphasis on nonviolence and civil disobedience led by Mohandas Gandhi.   • Assassination of Mahatma Gandhi

    The day that three gunshots, fired by Nathuram Godse, ended the life of Mahatma Gandhiji. Godse later explained his reasonings to be politcal.
  • The Massacre of Hyderabad

    The Massacre of Hyderabad
    From September of 1948 until October of the same year between 27,000 and 40,000 people died in the city of Hyderabad as a result of 'police action' under the command of PM Jawaharlal Nehru. The massacre followed conflict between the Prince Nizam, who wanted to become Independent, and Delhi, who wanted Hyderabad to stay within the Union of India.
  • 1969 Gujarat Riots

    The 1969 Gujarat Riots were violence that took the lifes of 660 people in the Indian state of Gujarat following Hindu-Muslim conflict. Historians and writers agree that the cause was mostly socioeconomic and political. Damage also extended to the 1074 people were injured and over 48,000 who lost their property.
  • Nellie Massacre

    Nellie Massacre
    The Nellie Massacre was a muslim genocide that took place over a six hour period that morning of February the 18th. The massacre took the lives of around 2,191 people from 14 villages - most of the victims were muslims from East Bengal. The violence was seen as a sort of fallout from the decision to hold politcal elections during the midst of Assam Movement. It is an example of islamophobia at it's worst.
  • Assassination of Indira Gandhi

    Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her body guards at her residence in Delhi in the wake of Operation Blue Star which left the Golden Temple (the holy place of the Sikhs) badly damaged.
  • 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots

    1984 Anti-Sikh Riots
    The 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots were a series of pogoms, or violence, against Sikh's. 3,000 Sikhs were killed in Delhi and 5,000 others were killed throught areas of Northern India, bringing the death toll to 8,000. The riots were in response to the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh body guards. They lasted from October 31st until November 3rd of 1984.
  • Bombay Riots

    Bombay Riots
    Refers to a period of time from December 6th 1992 until January of 1993 in which around 900 people were killed due to Hindu-Muslim conflict due to the demolition of a mosque. Hindus and muslims were both killed though muslims were the majority of the victims.
  • Laxmanpur Bathe Massacre

    Laxmanpur Bathe was the site of a massacre of around 60 Dalits by the upper-caste Ranvir Sena - they assumed to the Dalits to be sympathizers of the Maoists.
  • 2002 Gujarat Riots

    2002 Gujarat Riots
    The Gujarat Riots were a three day period of violence between Hindu and Muslims followed by three weeks and then a few months of continued violence. Around 800 Muslims were killed and up to 260 Hindus were killed in the most heinous and brutal of deaths.
  • 2012 Assam Violence

    The 2012 Assam Violence was a series of riots due to conflict between the ethnic Bodo people and Muslims. The lives of 77 people were claimed.
  • 2012 Delhi Gang Rape

    2012 Delhi Gang Rape was an act of violence that occured on the night of December 16th. A young woman was returning home from the movies with a male friend - she was brutally raped by an entire bus of men including the driver and then left to bleed out on the side of the street. Though she survived the initial attack she died later in a Singapore hospital due to internal trauma and bleeding. The gang rape marked a series of non-violent protests in Delhi which demanded proper treatment of women.
