Utilizing Child Find
All school districts are required to identify, locate, evaluate, and count all children that may have educational disabilities, from ages that range from birth -22 yrs.Districts must ensure that children who are known or suspected of having a learning disability are referred to the IEP team. -

Referral
Parents, teachers, or administrators may make a referral if they have identified a child who needs special education services. Parents may request to have their child evaluated due to concerns that they feel their child may be in need of special education services. Once the school has received the referral, the parents must be immediately notified of the referral in writing. Once a referral is made, a decision must be made within 15 days of whether or not a child needs special education services -
Disposition of Referral and Written Notice to parents
Within the 15 days, the school must notify the parents in writing on the team decision in regards to the disposition of referral. The written notice must include the reasons for referral. The parents must also be notified of any further actions, evaluations, or decisions. -
Disposition of Referral and IEP Meeting
Within the 15 days after referral, the IEP team must meet to determine eligibility of special education services. At this meeting the IEP team will review all data and information about the child, If the team feels like they do not have enough information, an evaluation may need to be conducted. If enough evidence and information is available, the team may decide that the child is eligible for special education services. -
Evaluation
After receiving parental consent for evaluation, the evaluation must be completed within 45 days to determine the child's educational needs and if they need special education services.Evaluation may be conducted if the IEP team identifies that the child has a disability that affects more than one major life functions and is in need of a 504 plan. -
Determining Eligibility and WPN to Parents
Once evaluations are completed, the IEP team must provide written summary of test results. This includes WPN to parents of their child's eligibility. The IEP team then has 30 days to write the child's Individualized Education Plan. -
Placement
Once the IEP is approved by the team and the parents, the team then decides where the child's needs will best be met in the least restrictive environment. If the child must be educated separately, the team will address this. -
Development and Approval of the IEP
The IEP team must meet within 30 days to develop the child's IEP once eligibility is determined. This usually happens during the same IEP meeting previously or shortly after. The student's current abilities must be taken into consideration as well as their current academic achievements. -
Monitoring
The IEP team must monitor the child and reconvene with an IEP meeting to review and revise the IEP at least once a year. If a member of the IEP (this includes parents) feel that the IEP needs to be revised at any point, a meeting will take place.
