U.S. Imperialism

  • U.S begins to recognize it has large potential expansion and growth

During this period the U.S. finally made the Monroe Doctrine which basically freed them from all control and influence of Europe. This obviously opened them to all the possibilities of growth and expansion which is very important, and why I choose this event.
  • The U.S. first encounters with Japan

When Commodore Matthew Perry sailed to present day Tokyo Bay, Japan, he met the Emperor, showed him the new military technology, gave him many gifts, and ended up becoming one of the first foreign traders that U.S. acquired. This is important because it shows some of the U.S. first steps to imperialism.
  • U.S.’s further expansion is the Pacific

As Matthew Perry kept sailing around he set a precedent for further expansion across the Pacific Ocean. This includes when the U.S. took possession of the Midway Islands and made treaties to increased trade with the Hawaiian Islands. This gave the U.S. the right to build a naval base at Pearl Harbor, and this was all important because it is showing how quickly the U.S. is imperializing.
  • U.S. buys Alaska

After spending $7.2 million dollars to Russia, the U.S. obtained the 49th state of their country. I choose this because it is literally a huge part of America, and a large act of imperialism.
  • U.S. Annex Hawaii

After many merchants sailing past Hawaii and making trade stops, then white planters pretty much becoming the only ones to vote, then finally, after overthrowing Queen Liliuokalani, President Harrison signed the treaty of annexation. This is an important one because it was the first annexation of the U.S.’s imperialism.
  • Treaty of Paris

The treaty of Paris was an agreement between Spain and the U.S. It officially ended the war between the two (The U.S. were the victors) and ended with Spain giving up control over Cuba, Puerto Rico, Pacific Island of Guam, and sold Philippians to the U.S. for $20 Million. Important because shows how the imperialism of the U.S. is very strong and even made a mighty power fall.
  • Roosevelt settles tension between Russia and Japan

When Roosevelt many things happened, including: earning a Nobel peace prize, but also entering troubled waters with Japan. Japan is one of their foreign traders and to loose them would not be good. That is why this is important.
  • Taft’s dollar diplomacy

President Taft created a program called the “Dollar Diplomacy” which basically increases American investments in businesses and banks throughout Central America and the Caribbean. I choose this because it shows the presidents even pushing for imperialism too.
  • U.S. investments on Cuba

The U.S.’s investments on Cuba quadrupled to $220 million when company businesses gained control over Cuba’s economy. This is important because it shows how Imperialism is making America very wealthy.
  • U.S. finishes and uses the Panama Canal

This was very important because it made trade a lot easily (less traveling around), and gave the U.S. a huge advantage. Although it cost millions of dollars it helped the U.S. to make so much more. That’s basically why I choose this date.
