    The Compromise of 1850 admitted California as a free state and allowed New Mexico & Utah to decide if they want to be free states. No slaves were allowed in Washington D.C. and finally, The Fugitive Slave Act was enforced. The Fugitive Slave Act required citizens to apprehend runaway slaves

    The Kansas Nebraska Act of 1854 was made to allow the people of Kansas and Nebraska decide whether or not to allow slaves/slavery within their borders.
  • Dred Scott decision of 1857

    Sandford, legal case in which the U.S. Supreme Court on March 6, 1857, ruled that Dred Scott (Slave) who had resided in a free state and territory was not thereby entitled to his freedom. "African Americans were not and could never be citizens of the United States."
