Children's Books
The first forms of media I was introduced to were mostly children's books. Many were interactive and challenged the reader's imagination and all were heavy on visuals. -
Television
When I ran out of books to read, my mother would leave me by the television so she could carry out her errands. She would always leave on educational channels like National Geographic, Animal Planet, History, and Discovery Channel hoping I would learn something each minute I had my eyes on the TV. I had no idea then how to change the channel, so after days of watching the same things, I developed a love for the channels to this day. -
Encyclopedias
My mother found out that I had only gained an interest in things animal or civilization related thanks to the channels I have been watching. So, I was introduced to thick encyclopedias that covered my favorite topics. This way, I was able to learn more and more about things I loved. Soon, these became the only books I would ever read. -
Cartoons
The year I discovered cartoons was one of the greatest years of my life. Back then I loved to draw, and seeing the drawing's of other artists come to life, complete with a personality, created an addiction to them. After this, I was even more encouraged to draw. -
Gameboy Advance SP
The first console had ever Iaid my hands on was a GameBoy Advance SP. I played Pokemon Silver on it, and this developed an interest for fictional creatures whether they were monsters, aliens, or robots. -
Internet
The first time I used the internet was when I was shown a funny animal video she found on YouTube. I was never properly taught how to use it though, and the farthest I would go on the internet were online images. -
Movies
I became a huge fan of movies after the discovery of HBO and FOX on television. I was always terrified by horror movies, but in a way intrigued. I believe this was what formed my interest in horror movies today. -
YouTube
I had finally learned what site my sister used to show me that funny animal video. It was YouTube. I used this site to watch all sorts of videos, especially ones that were animal-related. I personally loved 'epic fails' and funny cat videos. -
Nintendo DS
My grandparents bought each of their grandchildren a Nintendo DS, a present I would forever cherish. I would play it for days on end as it ran so much better than a GameBoy. It was like a Wii, but for the pocket! -
Nintendo Wii
The Nintendo Wii was the first gaming console I played that was connected to the television. Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Wii Sports were incredibly fun couch games to play with the family. -
Other Websites
The more hours I spent on the internet, the more I learned how to use it and what I can do. I used online encyclopedias to learn things I didn't find in my books. -
DVDs
I bought plenty of my favorite movies in stores like AstroVision so I could watch them at home. I would also spend a lot of my allowance on pirated movies sold on the street. -
DSi XL
What was better than a DS? A bigger one. My brother got me a Nintendo DSi XL after I left my first DS in a drawer in Australia. I used this one to play mostly Dragon Quest and pirated R4 games. -
Playstation 3
The games on the PS3 were far more diverse than that of the Wii, and for that I enjoyed. I would often play games like Call of Duty and God of War, but only until my brother would catch me changing up his game files. I would only end up playing LEGO games. -
Magazines
I was a huge fan of K-Zone magazines. Before using the internet as often as I do now, K-Zone was what informed me of what was coming up this year, whether they were movies, video games, or cartoons. -
Nokia 3310
The time my mom gave me a Nokia was the time I truly felt like an adult. With this block of wires and circuits, I was able to text and call anyone from afar. -
iPad
I was also given a secondhand iPad from my father. It was quite scuffed and damaged, but I still thought its touchscreen technology was incredible. -
9gag
9Gag became my primary source of entertainment for 2 years. I had loved everything about it. The cats, the posts, and most especially, memes in their golden age. -
Playstation 4
I mainly used this console to play newer games and because it ran better than the PS3. I let my brother have it because he used it most often, and because my wallet couldn't handle the price of their games. -
Movie Websites
I use Putlocker to binge-watch movies I didn't get to experience in the cinema, while I use KissAnime and KissCartoon to stream shows that I enjoy. -
Facebook
I joined Facebook late but I'm glad I did because now, communication is easier than ever. -
3DS XL
I saved my money and bought myself a 3DS to play Animal Crossing, Pokemon, and Mario Kart with classmates who had the same games. -
Steam
To make use of the PC we had at home, I downloaded Steam to play games with incredible storytelling like Fallout 4, Skyrim, and Witcher. -
iPhone 5
The touchscreen technology of the iPhone made it incomparable to the Nokia I had. Owning a phone increased my activity on social media. -
MacBook
My workload got heavy in 8th grade, so my parents thought it would help if they got me a laptop where I could store documents and presentations. -
iPad Mini
I thought getting a smaller iPad would be a lot more convenient, and it was. I played the same games and used the same applications, but this model had an updated software. -
Instagram
I never really bothered to use Instagram, but 2016 was the year I chose to do so. Its simple feed-scrolling mechanism was extremely efficient and just like Facebook, I was able to keep up with classmates. Instagram has easily become one of my most used sites. -
Spotify
I used Spotify to download and listen to my favorite songs and artists. -
Netflix
I used Netflix to download and watch my favorite movies. Subscriptions were not all that cheap, but it is a pretty good site to use when looking for movies to watch. -
Discord
I used Discord to communicate with friends through voice chat while playing online games. -
Reddit
The Reddit servers are massive. I log on to see other people's opinions regarding topics of my choice. It is not only a source of entertainment, but you can learn a lot of topics you never believed you would ever learn as well. -
Microsoft Surface Pro
When my MacBook broke, I desperately needed a new laptop to use for all of my documents and projects. I was given the Surface as a present and its flexibility made it convenient to use. -
Gaming Laptop
When my mother needed a new laptop, she felt it would be better for the Surface to go to her. I used this laptop to play games the Surface could never handle, and use it for work as well. -
Nintendo Switch
The Nintendo Switch was the newest member of the Nintendo family. The fact that soon I would be able to play upgraded versions of games I grew up with on a much more powerful engine was what intrigued me to get one for myself.
