A Timeline of My Life By Tristan Britton-Harr

  • My beginning

    My beginning
    I was born on December 21, 2003 in Oxnard, California. My father was stationed here because he was apart of the Navy and my mother moved with him to help raise my twin sister and me in a family environment. I was born into a southern military influenced culture because my parents were from Florida and my father was in the military. These factors would be important because I would end up moving all over the country to different places my dad was stationed and a strict home environment.

    During this stage, Kohlberg says children have self-interest and obey rules to avoid punishment or gain concrete rewards.

    Sensorimotor Stage

    During the sensorimotor stage, Piaget say this stage (from birth to nearly 2 years of age) is when infants know the world mostly in terms of their sensory impressions and motor activities.
  • Learning to Talk

    Learning to Talk
    Around 9 months old I began talking. This was a significant event in my development because I started to communicate my needs or wants calling “mama” or “dadda”. I would also start developing different areas of my brain that involves language and communication.

    During this stage between 1-3 years old, toddlers learn to exercise their will and do things for themselves, or they doubt their abilities.
  • Learning to Walk

    Learning to Walk
    Between being 12 months old and 18 months old, I learned to walk. This would be a significant event in my development because I would begin to explore my surroundings by walking around. During this time I would continue my development of object permanence, the awareness that things continue to exist even when not perceived, as I moved around and became conscious of items I explored. I would have most likely also been picking up items and placing them in my mouth as I carried on my adventures.

    During the preoperational stage, Piaget’s theory says this stage (from about 2 to 6 or 7 years of age) is when a child learns to use language but does not yet comprehend the mental operations of concrete logic.

    During this stage, Erikson says Preschoolers learn to initiate tasks and carry out plans, or they feel guilty about their efforts to be independent.

    Starting Preschool
    During August of 2008, I started my education at preschool. This would be a significant event in my life because it would be the first time I was in a school environment learning. It was important for my development because I was interacting with kids my age and building friendships without my parents presence and obeying school rules. . Preschool would establish a scaffold, a framework that offers children temporary support as they develop higher levels of thinking, for elementary school.

  • Begin to Play Sports

    Begin to Play Sports
    The first sport I played as a child was soccer. This is significant for my development because it gave me the feeling of being inferior towards the other teams and the ability to engage in logical thinking. I would strategize the best plays to pass the ball to my teammates or score on the goalie.

    During this stage, Erikson says children learn the pleasure of applying themselves to tasks, or they feel inferior.
  • Playing Video Games

    Playing Video Games
    In 2010 smart phones became more popular and my parents finally got iPhones. On my Dad’s phone he allowed me to download the game Angry Birds which I started to play all the time. I remember beating all the levels and being satisfied and having fun. This is a significant event for my development because I was doing activities for my personal pleasure and enjoyment.

    During the concrete operational stage, Piaget says this stage of cognitive development (from about 7 to 11 years of age) is when children gain the mental operations that enable them to think logically about concrete events.

    Attending Private School
    The first few years of my education had been at public schools from kindergarten to 2nd grade. After 2nd grade, my parents saw that the public school education was not giving me the opportunity to apply myself and challenge me. I was then enrolled into a private elementary school which was important for my development because it allowed me to apply myself to tasks bettering my education.

    During this stage, Kohlberg says adolescence children uphold laws and rules to gain social approval or maintain social order.
  • Testing Different Styles

    Testing Different Styles
    In middle school, I began to test out different aspects of my appearance. Since I attended a private school I could only experiment with different hair styles. I started to gel me hair and finding my identity: our sense of self; according to Erikson, the adolescent’s task is to solidify a sense of self by testing and integrating various roles. This was significant for my development because I started to find what I like and who I want to be.

    During the formal operational stage, Piaget says this stage of cognitive development (normally beginning about age 12) is when people begin to think logically about abstract concepts.

    During this stage, Erikson says teenagers work at refining a sense of self by testing roles and then integrating them to form a single identity, or they become confused about who they are.

    During this stage, Kohlberg says people’s actions reflect belief in basic rights and self-defined ethical principles.
  • First Job

    First Job
    My first job was being a lifeguard at the YMCA pool. I am responsible for upholding the rules at work making sure children are safe while swimming. This is significant for my development because it helped me further test roles within my identity by making mature and accountable for others and their safety.
  • Going to College

    Going to College
    In August of 2022, I will be attending college. By attending college I will be placed into a new environment where I will solidify my identity and focus on who I am and what I want to be. This is a significant part of my development because I will adapt a social identity (the “we” aspect of our self-concept; the part of our answer to “Who am I?” that comes from our group memberships) with my peers and friends on campus.

    Young Adulthood

    During this stage, Erikson says Young adults struggle to form close relationships and to gain the capacity for intimate love, or they feel socially isolated.
  • Getting My Own Place

    Getting My Own Place
    After living in college in dorms and with roommates, getting my own house or apartment will increase my independence. This is significant for my development because allows me to establish my own basic rights and self-defined ethical principles within my own environment.
  • Relationships

    Relationships
    In college, my romantic relationships will become more intimate as I become mature and ready for commitment. My girlfriend in college could be around for multiple years after graduation and possibly become my wife in the distant future. This is significant for my development because it shows I have the capacity to gain intimate love and close relationships.
  • Graduating College

    Graduating College
    When I graduate from college I will be exiting out of the emerging adulthood (a period from about age 18 to the mid-twenties, when many in Western cultures are no longer adolescents but have not yet achieved full independence as adults) through being fully independent and forced to live in the real world. This is significant for my development because it reinforces my identity without having decisions being made for me. It also allows me to think logically and abstract concepts about my future.

    Marriage
    After establishing a close relationship with my partner for multiple years it would most likely make sense to commit fully with marriage. This would ensure a forever close relationship and intimacy with my spouse. This is significant for my development because it forms a bond between my my spouse and me bettering me with my ethical principles and beliefs.
  • Voting

    Voting
    After most likely not doing my part in society like most people in their 20s, I will decide to vote in the 2036 election. This would be a significant event for my development because I will be following my beliefs in ethical principles when I am mature enough to make a coherent decision on government. By voting I would be upholding the ethical principles of autonomy.
  • Divorce

    Divorce
    As statistics have proven, 50% for first marriages end in divorce within the first five years. Statistically, it is very likely my first marriage will sadly end in a divorce. This is significant for my development because it shows the struggles I may have within my relationships with intimacy and feeling socially isolated.

    Middle Adulthood

    In this stage, Erikson says Middle-aged people discover a sense of contributing to the world, usually through family and work, or they may feel a lack of purpose.

    Having Children
    When I finally establish a healthy relationship, the next step to building a family would be to have children. Emerging in middle adulthood, I would gain a want to contribute to the world possibly through raising children. This is a significant event in my development because it shows my contribution towards creating a better society by raising well mannered kids.
  • Career

    Career
    Hopefully by this time in my life I have fulfilled my desire to be in charge of my own company being a CEO. This is significant for my development because me being a CEO will contribute to the world by providing jobs my my employees and helping the economy with my successful business.
  • Midlife Crisis

    Midlife Crisis
    After becoming a CEO of my own company, having a mansion, nice cars, and heirs to my wealth because of the success from my business, I will feel empty with no purpose. I achieved everything I wanted but as the old saying goes “money doesn’t buy happiness” which leaves me questioning my life. This is significant for my development because I begin to have a midlife crisis and feel a lack of purpose in life.

    The success from my business has lead my to make headlines across the world. I would be interviewed on how I managed to make such a successful business and how others can aspire to be like me. This would be a significant event in my development because I would contribute to the world my advice on how to be successful entrepreneur and making headlines.

    Children Become Valedictorians
    Through encouragement and instilling the importance of hard work into my children, they become valedictorians in their high school. This is a significant event for my development because I help contribute to the world through raising my children that will benefit and create change in society.
  • Donate to Make-A-Wish

    Donate to Make-A-Wish
    Seeing how fortunate I am to have healthy children, I would decide to donate some money towards a charity like Make-A-Wish. I would hope to make kids that are not in the best situation health wise happy with the time they have left in any possible way. This would be a significant event in my development because I would contribute to the world by helping those in need.

    During this stage, Erikson says people start reflecting on their lives, older adults may feel a sense of satisfaction or failure.

    Finally seeing my children graduate from college after all the time and money I spent on them over the years will mark my hard work with parenting. This is significant for my development because I will look back on my times of raising my children and feel satisfied with how far they have come.

    The moment my son or daughter has their first child I will be very excited like most grandparents. I will instill my wisdom upon my child as the enter parenthood and are nervous for the challenges ahead. This would be a significant event in my development because I will reflect on the time of raising my children by helping aid my son or daughter to become a great parent like myself.

    From all my hard work of moving up the ladder of business and becoming a CEO, it will be well deserved to retire with such success. When I retire I hope to be set for life buying private islands and a private jet to visit my children where ever they may be. I will feel nostalgic over the times of struggling to make a paycheck free graduating college to now being a multimillionaire. This would be a significant event in my development because I will reflect if the good old days at the office.

    Passing Down My Business
    After closely analyzing the companies performance after I retire, I would be grateful to officially pass down the business to my son or daughter. I would want to keep the business in the family as a way of honoring my hard work of building it to the success it became. I would also want the best for my children and to have them set as CEO’s. This would be a significant event in my development because be satisfied by helping my children and putting the company in good hands.

    50th College Reunion
    Getting back together with old friends from college to commemorate our graduation and our successes would leave me with a sense of satisfaction. After 50 year, the lives of my friends and my own have drastically changed but we still cherish the times we had in college. This would be a significant event in my development because I would feel satisfied catching up with friends and reflect on the memories I made in college.

    Living my whole life in America, it has been my dream to explore the possibilities around the world. After retirement, I would hope to move to Europe living in multiple countries like England, Netherlands, Italy, and many more explore different cultures. This would be a significant event in my development because I would be satisfied by living out my dream and fantasy with my wife making memories we will forever cherish.

    Spouse Dies
    Unfortunately, the average life expectancy for women is 81 years old meaning it would be likely my wife would pass before me. Even though her passing would be devastating, I would be honored to have spent 45 years with the love of my life. This would be a significant event in my development because I would reflect on the times I shared with my wife from the first time we met to the last moments we shared together.
  • Watching Grandchildren Graduate College

    Watching Grandchildren Graduate College
    Seeing my grandchildren graduate college would bring me a tremendous amount of happiness. I would be so proud to have all my immediate family educated and successful within their lives. This would be a significant event in my development because I would feel satisfaction and reflect on the role model I exemplified for my children and grandchildren as they grow up. I would also reflect on the wisdom I gave my children that helped them raise magnificent children of their own.

    My Children Help Me
    Being old has will take a toll on my physical abilities causing me to need help from my children. I wouldn’t want a care taker because I would not feel comfortable having a stranger take care of me. My children should take care of me after all the things I have done and provided for them along with being an excellent father to them. This would be a significant event in my development because I would feel satisfied having my children look after me during my last months and showing their love.

    Dear friends and family, I am so grateful to have lived such a long and great life. I would hope I was a caring father, an affectionate husband, and a humorous friend. I am proud of the accomplishments I have made with my business and raising my amazing children. My only regret was not marring my first wife so I could have spent less time on the mistakes and more of being with my family. I cherished the time I had seeing my children and grandchildren become marvelous people. Know I love you all.
