    Moctezuma Xocoyotzin ascended the throne

    Montezuma II (1466-1520) was one of the last rulers of the great Aztec Empire before the arrival of the Spanish. Under his mandate, the city of Tenochtitlan managed to maintain its power and the domain it exercised over other peoples, who were obliged to pay tribute.

    “La noche triste”

    For centuries, Mexicans called June 30, 1520 "La Noche Triste," or the "Sad Night," the name given to it by the eventually victorious Spaniards. That was because hundreds of Spaniards and their Indigenous allies died when Hernán Cortés and his troops fled the increasingly rebellious Aztec capital, now Mexico City.

    Foundation of Merida

    Mérida was founded in 1542 by Francisco de Montejo “el Mozo” (the son), and built on the site of the ancient Maya city T'ho, meaning “city of five hills.” T'ho was the center of Mayan culture and activity in the Yucatan region.

  • Manifesto against comets

    This comet was the first discovered by telescope. It was one of the brightest comets of the 17th century, reaching peak brightness on 29 December 1680, remaining visible until March 1681. It has the modern designation C/1680 V1, and is also known as Kirch's Comet after its discoverer.
