The Pascaline was the first digital calculator. It was invented by Blaise Pascal to help his father collecting taxes. This calculator was a resemblance of a 1940 mechanical calculator. It took him three years to finish building it. To use the calculator you had to rotate the dials on the machine’s face. The calculator could add and subtract.

Stepped Reckoner
The Stepped Reckoner was also a math device. It could add, subtract, multiply, and divide. The first Stepped Reckoner was made in 1791. That was after the inventor, Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibnitz, pasted away.

Jacquards Loom (punched cards)
The loom was a machine that weaved thread by putting punch cards in it for patterns. Because of that, people didn’t have to weave thread to make fabric. Now we have an easier way to make cloths.

Charles Babbage (Difference and Analytical Engines)
Charles Babbage was a great inventor. He created the cowcatcher, dynamometer, standard railroad gauge, lights for a lighthouse, and many more. If it wasn’t for some of his inventions, the modern computer probably wouldn’t be this great. One of Charles Babbage greatest inventions was the Difference Engine. He didn’t build it but he was the one to draw the blueprints. Charles Babbage was one of the greatest inventors of all time.

Lady Augusta Ada Countess of Lovelace
Lady Augusta Ada was a mathematician, scientist, and a romantic poet. She helped Charles Babbage with lots of his work. She also is known as the first computer programmer. Lady Augusta Ada wrote programs for the machines created by Charles Babbage.

Herman Hollerith and his Tabulating Machine
Herman Hollerith was a statistician for the U.S. Census of Bureau. He had to help find the population for states. To make his job easier, he created the tabulating machine. That was a electromechanical machine that assisted in summarizing data.

The Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC)
The ABC (Atanasoff-Berry Computer) was a digital computer. Actually, it’s the first one to be made. John Atanasoff-Berry and he invented it at Iowa State University in 1939-1942. It used vacuum tubes, punched cards, and a memory device that looked like a drum. This computer processed number 0 and number1.

Harvard’s Mark I
Harvard’s Mark 1 was a computer really named IBM’s ASCC (Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator). It was invented by Howard Aiken at Harvard University. Mathematical data was represented by the mechanical relays which had to be flipped back and forth. ENIAC
The ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) was a digital computer that was ordered by the U.S. Department of Defense in 1946. It was created because the U.S. Department of Defense wanted something to guide missiles so the army will have fewer friendly fires. The inventers of the ENIAC are John Presper Eckert and John Mauchly. Vacuum tubes were used for storage and control. They were plugged up into the ENIAC. The ENIAC used about 17000 vacuum tubes.

Dr. Grace Murray Hopper
Dr. Grace Murray Hopper is the first person to find a live bug in a computer. She used Howard Aiken’s machine for gunnery and ballistics calculation for the U.S. Bureau of Ordnance’s Computation project. One day her results were incorrect. She looked in the program and found a live moth.They took the bug out and the results finally became positive. The first time sombody got on the internet was in the 1970's. A guy named Vinton Cerf invented it. If we didn't have the internet we wouldn't be able search important things up. Also, if you are a lazy person, you would have to look in a book.

The Abacus
The abacus is a calculating tool. It was invented in c.3000 BCE. The Babylonians created it, but some people say that it was the Chinese who actually invented it. To use the abacus you have to slide the beads up and down to subtract, add, divide, or multiply.
