Technology Use Progression

  • Family Desktop Computer

My first technology was a desktop computer at home that I would play with the paint program on for hours if I got that much time. My father was head of computer services for a school district in Phoenix, so I was exposed to higher technology perhaps a bit earlier than my cohort.
  • Personal Desktop Computer

Tech number two would have to be my own personal computer. Having technology basically rammed down my throat since early childhood, I kind of rebelled and didn't want to learn or really have anything to do with it... so when I finally discovered the internet in high school it was way on the far side of intimidating for me.
  • The Internet

I would have to say that the internet itself was technology number three for me. I was right at the time that the information age truly took off and I fought it kicking and screaming.
  • The Tamagotchi

The next major piece of tech I remember was a Tamagotchi. They were these ridiculous little key chain toys where you had to play with, feed, and take care of an electronic pet. I got into so much trouble in class because I would bring it to school and play with it during class. It confused the other kids because I got mine before they were released in the U.S.
  • Baby's 1st Cell Phone

My last bit of tech would have to be when I finally got trapped into using a cellphone in my early 20's when I was in a situation that I needed to be able to be reached at any given moment no matter where I was. It was one of the original Nokia brick phones that could survive a nuclear blast. I still called it an electronic leash, no matter how useful it was! For me it's the ultimate irony that I can't survive without it now.
