Welcome to my timeline on school technology
The purpose of this timeline is to present five technological tools that I plan to use in the classroom. In order to make sense of this presentation I thought that it was important to go back to the past. There is much we can learn from the past, the education manipulative and resources used in the past built the teachers and professionals of today. While much of that technology is obsolete, it worked, it was the introduction to what we have today. What I have done is go the past and search for -
First Ideas of Classroom Technology ( The Horn Book)
Wooden paddles with lessons were utilized as classroom technology thru the colonial era. An innovative way of manipulative that allow the children to memorize the lesson thru association of images. This was called "the horn book" -
Magic Lantern
This technology tool the predecessor of the slide machine projected images printed on a glass plate. Chicago schools made this tool one of its best in the classroom reaching a collection of 8,000 slides by the end of World War I. -
The Chalkboard
The most durable instrument of American education a standard tool until the computer age, still used in many classrooms around the world and the United States. -
Pencil & Paper
By the late 19th century a mass production of Pencil along with paper revolutionized the classroom. Making it easier for the student to continue education outside of the classroom, and soon enough came "homework". -
Film Strip Projector
The film strip projector revolutionized the learning world one more time, the visual way of learning had evolved and the magic lantern was a technology of the past. " With the advent of projected images books will soon be obsolete in schools, scholars will soon be instructed thru the eyes" Thomas Edison -
The Digital Projector takes over "The Magic Lantern"
While the projector was invented in 1964, the technology has come a long way now days. I think slide shows and projected images are very important at the time of teaching content specially if it involves science or history. I plan to include slide shows in my classroom with the use of an image projector I can hook up to a laptop, Ipad or any other electronic device. Obviously it has come a long way from the magic lantern, there is no need to store the slides. -
The Whiteboard a new form of the Chalboard
While it was invented in the 1950's it became a necessity in the 1990's as technology in the classroom advance. I can use the white board to help my students intearct between a lesson I may have created in a software and the board itself. Is a good way of combining teaching practices of the past, by letting the student write on the board and retain thru association, while I make a presentation with the use of a projector and a laptop. -
Windows Media Player takes over "Film Strip Projector"
In this day of technology the hardware is no longer a worry at the time of showing a video in the classroom. What becomes important is the software for the presentation or to build the presentation. While the list of software could be endless, I like to emphasize on the one that will allow me to present a video in the classroom, whether I am using a desktop, laptop, or tablet for any of the presentation. Windows media player will enable me to access the video and show it to the class. -
Interactive Pen - A revolutionary version of the Pencil
The popularity of the interactive pen began to take more form and shape in the late 1990's early 2000, is a revolution in the classroom if accompany by an IPAD or tablet, as well as an interactive board. Students can create their lessons and do their homework with this pen to the point that the use of paper and pencil is minimal or non at all. The use of this techonolgy will allow me to teach students about technology while they are doing their lessons on any subject. -
The New Horn Book - The IPAD
If my school budget permits I plan to use IPAD lessons in my classroom, while it gives the student the ability to perfect their technological skills, it also provides me with valuable visual and content right at their thumb tips. Wether is science, math, english, history, geography, or any other subject. The students has the ability to exercise brain, manual, visual, hearing, and many other skills within the classroom while learning the lesson in a fun way. -
