  • My Birthday

    My Birthday
Stephen Allgyer is my english name. I once heard it on the boat to America and liked it. Ān Dū is my real name. I was born in Shanghai, China. I was born into a somewhat wealthy family. I started working with my father when I was 10 years old. He worked as a farmer, which is a very wealthy profession to take on. When I was 12, my fathers farm got taken away by the chinese government. We had no other choice than to pack up and move to America. Maybe we could find a job there.

The boat was a alright experience. Some sicknesses roamed about the ship, as if it was an unwanted passenger. The weather was extremely hot. The ship rocked many times and water sprayed into the boat. My first view of Angel Island was amazing. There was so many people that wanted to do the same thing I did.

I was so excited to see what life has to offer here in America. I see so many happy faces when they see this terrific land. The examination was easy for me. I was healthy and happy. The rest of my family did well too. We met many people. I made some friends who were also from china. Some of the white people who were at this place weren't so happy to see any of us.

    My Father Becomes a Miner
Father was looking for jobs since we arrived in America. Our money that we had left was scarce. Then he figured out about the Gold Rush. It took a while for him to understand some english words. On his first day of the job, he struck 7 ounces of gold. If he kept working like that, we would be able to live in a much bigger house. But the white people don't like him. They always take his mining spots from the previous day and strike a lot of gold.

    New Years
It was a sad, yet happy day on New Years. We usually spend it with friends. I noticed my father was acting differently. He seemed to be acting sad and depressed. He told me about how the white people are treating him. I tried to distract him and enjoy the New Year as it is. We had some company for around an hour and that lifted father's spirits.

It started out as a regular day. My father got home and said he met a man named Boss Tweed. He seen my father and noticed his struggle for his life and his family. Tweed offered him a job as an architect. Its a job that you get to design buildings. He would get paid more and we could still live in the U.S.A.
