Hernán Cortés sparked the interest of many people to explore North and South America because he found so much gold there. He also conquered the Aztecs and leader Montezuma. His voyage was important because he brought back over 100 tons of gold and he made others want to explore North and South America. -

DeVaca discovers Texas
They decided to travel farther when they hit Tampa Bay. He was shipwrecked, dehydrated, out of food, and in an overall unwell condition. He stayed in Texas for 4 years. DeVaca encounters the Karankawa, Jumanos, and Coahuitelcans. -

Fray Marcos and Esteban's Journey
The purpose of the journey was to find wealthy northern cities. Esteban was shot down by the indians and died. Marcos reported that there was a city of gold. (Cibola) -

Hernando de Soto was the leader and he died of a fever on May 21, 1542 at the Mississippi River. They discovered the MIssissippi River.
