Colombus was trying to find a west water route to India. He discovered the New World but did not know it. He brought back lots of gold and other goods. He started the Spanish exploring in North America because of the riches he found. -

Cortes Voyage
His goal was to find gold. He conquered the Aztecs and their leader, Moctezuma. He brought back $6 million worth of gold. He sparked the interest of many people to explore North and South America because he found so much gold while he was there. -

Pineda's Voyage
Pineda's goal was to find a water route to the Pacific Ocean. He explored the Coast from Florida to Texas and he possibly discovered the Rio Grande. He was the first to map the Gulf Coast from Florida to Texas. His map of the coast led to others exploring the land on the Gulf Coast. -

DeVaca discovers Texas
DeVaca discovered Texas by shipwrecking on an island called Galveston, Texas. He stayed in Texas for 4 years. -

Moscoso's Expedition
His leader was De Soto. His goal was to search for gold. He may have discovered the Mississippi River. He explored from Florida to Texas. He reported, like Coronado, that Texas is not a good place to explore and that you shouldn't go. Because of his report, and Coronado's, the Spanish will not return with any major expeditions for 150 years. -

Fray Marcos and Esteban Journey
Their goal was to study the land to the North and to verify the fact that the 7 cities of gold existed. They really didn't accomplish anything. Fray Marcos swears that he has seen a city filled with gold that looked larger than Mexico City. Because of this, Coronado is sent to find this city of gold. -

Coronado's Expedition
Coronado's goal was to find the 7 cities of gold. At first, he was looking for Cibola, but later, he looked for Quivera. He reported that Texas was horrible and that you shouldn't go to it. Because of his report, and Mescoso's, the Spanish do not return with any major expeditions for 150 years.
