    The army was overstaffed and very powerful after the loss of Cuba. It was the last remnant of the Spanish Empire.

    The social promblems incuded poverty for the poor and the proletariat which lead to alot of blood as the army fired on many proteestors. They called this :"Tragic week".

    Spain was a constitutional monarchy and leading the government then was Alfonso XIII. The government of Spain was corrupted and ineffiecient. Regionally, Caltonia and the Basque region wanted independance.

    Spanish army was massacred to Marocco when it attempted to stop the rebeliion. It ruined Spain's pride even more that it already was.

    General Primo de Rivera was in control of Spain. He tried not to collapse the monarchy. He was ruling Spain until 1930.

    General Sanjuro lead the army to try and over throw the government that was lead by Manuel Azana the Prime Minister at the time. Their attempt was unsuccessful. The army remained loyal.
  • 1929

    Depression hit Spain and everything begun to drop. Agricultural prices went down, the industrial production collapsed and the unemployment increased by 50 percent.
  • 1931-1932

    Caltonia recieved some self government. Jesuists took RE out of the school's education as it was banned. Divorse was allowed. Anyone in the army had to retire early and only got half the actual pay. All the estates in Spain were nationalised.

    Republic offends right wing and the reactional political party was formed called the CEDA. They guard the Roman Catholics and landlords, The two powerful trade unions (the anarcists and syndicatists). Both wanted to overthrow capitolism.

    The extreme left wing orgainsed strikes and riots to ruin the government of Azana. 25 people were killed in the hands of the governments' troops. The working class' support was lost towards the government. The socialists also dropped their support as well.

    The republicans agitated the military, industrialists, landowner and the catholic church. THese four bodies that were powerful looked for the fascists for help against the left wing government. A new fascists party was formed under Primo's son, Jose Antonio de Rivers.

    Azana resigned as Prime Minister and elections were once again under way, CEDA won the majority of the support and and formed the government. It was lead by Gil Robles. Robles took down Azana's government. The left wing parties made allies and joined as the popular front. They organised riots, strikes and vandalism.

    Coal miners sparked off strikes but it was put down by the army that was lead by General Franco. Spain was in chaos. Catalians had their prevlieges burned to the ground.

    The general elections was underway. The left wing popular won coalition and Azona was once again Prime Minister. Right wing formed National front so more polarisation. Socialists withdrew their support from popular front government. Public disturbances occured soon, which was making spain spiral out of control.

    The leader of the Right wing politician was murdered. Rigth wing was in seruois danger of the communists taking over. They begun to favour the idea of military lead by General Mola.

    General Franco took over the military, Spain morroco and crossed over into the mainland of Spain to take over the government. This is when the civil war begun.
