  • Colonization of Cape Town

    In 1652, Jan van Riebeeck established a small colony on the Cape of Good Hope as a refreshment station for the Dutch East India Company.

    In 1795 Britain occupied the Cape Colony making Cape Town its military headquarters for the region.

    The second Boer war

    The Second Boer War (11 October 1899 – 31 May 1902) was fought between the British Empire and two Boer states, the South African Republic (Republic of Transvaal) and the Orange Free State, over the Empire's influence in South Africa.
  • Cape Town became the seat of union parliment

    In 1910, Cape Town became the seat of the Union Parliament though the political center of the Union of South Africa would remain in Transvaal to the northeast.

    Apartheid

    Apartheid is the name of the racial institution that was established in 1948 by the National Party that governed South Africa until 1994. ... By 1948, Dr. D.F. Malan, the prime architect of apartheid, led the National Party in the first campaign that centered on openly racist appeals to white unity. Nelson Mandela was a very famous man because he removed the apartheid system.
  • Mandela sentenced to imprisonment

    In 1964 Nelson Mandela was sentenced to 20 years of prison on robben island.
  • Apartheid regime abolished

    South Africa since 1994 transitioned from the system of apartheid to one of majority rule. The election of 1994 resulted in a change in government with the African National Congress (ANC) coming to power. The ANC retained power after subsequent elections in 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2014.

  • Mandela Died

    Nelson mandela died in 2013. He was South Africas first black president and he got the nobel peace price in 1996 for getting rid of the Apartheid regime.
