Nelson Rolihlahla Mandella was born on July 18th, 1918 in Transkei, South Africa. Nelson was born to Cheif (Nkosi) Mphakanyiswa Gadla Mandela and Nosekeni Fanny Mandela. Nelson's father had 4 wives and a total of 13 children, so Nelson was born into a rather large family; 1 father, 1 mother and 3 sister wives, 3 full sisters, 3 half brothers, and six half sisters.
