It was common to give english names to the African Americans when they go to school. "On the first day of school my teacher, Miss Mdingane, gave each of us an English name. This was the custom among Africans in those days and was undoubtedly due to the British bias of our education. That day, Miss Mdingane told me that my new name was Nelson. Arrested Again
This time he's arrested for treason, along with 155 others, all of which acquitted by March of 1961. The importance of this trial is second to none it now exposed the government of South Africa sending men to prison for doing the right thing -
Sharpeville Massacre
5,000 to 7,000 black protesters stand outside the fence of the police station in Sharpeville and the police opened fire killing 69 people. -
ANC Banned
The white government banned the ANC from 1960 all the way until 1990, while it was banned it was still ran underground. -
Leaves South Africa
Mandela leaves South Africa to go and get military training and also gain support for the ANC. -
Returns home and is arrested
Mandela is sentenced to five years in prison for incitement and leaving the country without a passport -
Rivonia Trial
The ten leaders of the ANC or charged with recruiting persons for training in the preparation and use of explosives and in guerrilla warfare for the purpose of violent revolution and committing acts of sabotage, conspiring to commit these acts and to aid foreign military units when they [hypothetically] invaded the Republic, acting in these ways to further the objects of communism, and soliciting and receiving money for these purposes from sympathizers outside South Africa. -
Sentenced to life in prison
All except two of the ten men are convivted and sentenced to life in prison and arrive at Robben Island two days later -
ANC Unbanned
With the unbanning of the ANC Nelson Mandela is set free from almost 30 years of imprisonment. -
