Beginning of Apartheid
Racism had been going on for a long time in South Africa, but this was the official date apartheid began. 317 laws for apartheid were created by the nationalist party. -
African Nation Congress starts the Definace Campaign
Black people started breaking the laws set in 1948. They did things such as drinking out of water fountains and sitting on benches marked only for white people. -
Bantu Education Act is passed
This law made black and white children go to different schools. -
Law passed to give different races seperate homelands
The government made a new law that said black and white people would have different homelands, or Bantustans. They did this to keep black people from becoming official citizens of South Africa. -
Sharpville Massacre
69 black people are killed at the Sharpville police office, when they show up without their passbooks (books containing personal information that black people were required to carry with them), -
Nelson Mandela is arrested
Nelson Mandela was put in jail for five years. He was charged with incitement to strike and illegally leaving the country. -
Rhodesia illegally gains independence from Great Britian
Rhodesia's prime minister announces their independence from Great Britian and that white people will rule them. Great Britian was willing to give them indepence if blakc people could have some power, also. -
South Africa kicked out of the UN
South Africa is kicked out of the United Nations, due to apartheid. -
Soweto Massacre
Highschool kids start protesting for better education for black people. Police use tear gas and bullets, killing over 600 peope. -
Steve Biko is arrested
A man against apartheid, Steve Bilko, is arrested. He was one who organized the Soweto Massacre. -
Steve Biko is killed
Steve Bilko was arrested about a month ago, and dies in police custody. He dies of brain damage, most likely caused by being beaten by the police. -
President F.W. de Klerk ends ban
The President, F.W. de Klerk, lifted the ban on the African National Congress. -
Nelson Mandela is released from prison
Nelson Mandela is let out from prison and thanks F.W. de Klerk for setting him free, but says there is more work to be done to end apartheid. -
Nelson Mandela becomes president
South Africa has the first election where both blakc and white people can vote. Nelson Mandela becomes the first black president. -
Nelson Mandela dies
Nelson Mandela, president of South Africa, dies. South Africa is now led by Jacob Zuma. -
