  • Establishment of the Nation of Islam

    The Nation of Islam is an African-American religious and political movement that advocates for economic equality, social justice, and the uplifting of Black people in America. In July, 1930, Wallace D. Fard Muhammad founded the movement in Detroit, Michigan.
  • Elijah Muhammad Becomes Leader

    In 1934, Wallace Fard Muhammad mysteriously disappeared, resulting in Elijah Muhammad taking over his position and becoming the new leader of the NOI.
  • Elijah Muhammad Imprisoned

    In 1942, Elijah Muhammad was charged and convicted imprisoned for his refusal to comply with the World War 2 draft.
  • Elijah Muhammad Released

    In 1946, Elijah Muhammad was released from prison and continued his leadership of the NOI.
  • Malcom X Joins the Nation of Islam

    In 1952, Malcom X converted to the Nation of Islam while he was in prison.
  • Malcom X Becomes the Spokesperson for the Nation of Islam

    In 1961, Malcom X became the public face for the NOI, playing a vital role in advocating on behalf of its members and promoting the message of black empowerment. His speeches and outspoken words gained significant momentum, resulting in many people joining the NOI.
  • Malcom X Suspended

    In 1963, Malcom X was suspended from his role in the NOI because of the controversial comments he made after the JFK assassination.
  • Malcom X Leaves the Nation of Islam

    In 1964, Malcom X officially left the Nation of Islam because he was forcibly excommunicated and removed. Later on, he formed his own organization called the Muslim Mosque Inc.
  • Malcom X Assassination

    In February 1965, Malcom X was assassinated after giving a speech in New York City, afterwards causing tensions to rise between members of the Nation of Islam and Malcom X followers.
  • Elijah Muhammad Dies and His Son Succeeds Him

    In 1975, Elijah Muhammad died, leaving his son, Warith Deen Mohammed to become the new leader of the NOI. Warith began to implement many changes such as renaming the organization and moving more towards orthodox Islam.
  • Louis Farrakhan Reestablishes the Nation of Islam

    In 1978, a former protege of Malcom X, Louis Farrakhan, separated himself from Warith's leadership and reestablished the original principals and Nation of Islam organization.
  • Farrakhan Leads the Million Man March

    In 1995, Louis Farrakhan organized an led the Million Man March in Washington, DC. Hundreds of thousands of African American men came together, marching and advocating for social justice and unity.
  • Nation of Islam Today

    Today, The Nation of Islam is still led by Louis Farrakhan, continuing advocacy for economic equality, social justice, and the overall empowerment of African Americans.
