In August, 1962, Nelson Mandela was arrested after he was caught in a police road trap. Worse yet, after ransacking an ANC hideout in Rivonia, the South African police uncovered vital information about Mandela’s role in the ANC. Soon after, Mandela was arrested again and sentenced to life in prison.

Upon his release, Nelson Mandela began aiding the ANC in its negotiations with President de Klerk and other political figures/parties for the establishment of a multicultural government and the end of the apartheid. The talks between Nelson Mandela and F.W. de Klerk would later earn them both the Nobel Peace Prize in December, 1993
