Most significant Milestones

  • Early Mechanical Computers

    Early Mechanical Computers
The first compters were first designed by Charles Babbage in the mid 1800's. I feel that these are important because they opened the way up for a lot of different technologies that are used by our modern computers. They were very important with helping further the development with the computers we have today.
  • Electro-mechanical computers

    Electro-mechanical computers
This type of computer used mechanical intervals and also used electric moders to power them. They were either analog or digital. I thought it was important to highlight this one because during the development of these computers, many of the technologies and conceps are still used today. Also, they were used during world war II to decrypt German codes.
  • Electronic Computers

    Electronic Computers
The first electronic computers were developed during world war II. I felt it important to mention because the Colossus was developed to decryped secrete German codes during the war. Another break through or the electronic computer was nick-named "The Baby". This computer was not all that great, but it was the first computer to use the Williams tube, a type of random access memory (RAM) that used a cathode-raytube.
  • Commercial Computers

    Commercial Computers
These computers became avalible in the 1950's. These are important to highlight because, before this computers focused on science, math, and defense capabilities. These computers were designed for busineses perposes such as banking and accounting. In 1951 Lyons electronic office (LEO) became the first computer to run a regulater routine office job.
  • Transistor Compters

    Transistor Compters
This discovery of the transistor computer was very important because it lead to much small computers, a very important thing needed for business. These transistors lead to developments in computer peripherals. In 1956 the first diskdrive, IBM 350 RAMAC was introduced. Remote terminals became more common with these second generation computers.
  • Microchip and Microprocessor

    Microchip and Microprocessor
I believe that the microchip is one of the most important advances in computer technology. It lead to producing minicomputers which are smaller and less expensive for business and for people to own. The first processors were 4-bit but 8-bit models quicly followed by 1972
  • Personal Computers

    Personal Computers
These were first built in the early 1970's. In the year 1977 the trinity came forward. The Commodore PET, the Apple II, and the Tandy Corporation's TRS-80. These three computers were the breakthrew of personal computers and went on to sell millions.
  • Early Notebook and Laptops

    Early Notebook and Laptops
A really big breakthrew developed in the 1980's was the portable computer. Osborne computers introduced the Osborne 1, The first portable computer. I feel that these are important to mention because they were the first of portable computers. These were very large and heavy but they continued to develope and became easily portable and light. Now we have the Notebooks.
  • The Rise of Mobil computing

    The Rise of Mobil computing
Mobil computing is one of the most recent major milestones in the history or computers. January 9, 2007 Apple introduced the first iphone. With the iphone and the Motorola Droid it has become possible to preform a lot of the function that you could once only preform at the desk top. This is a huge breakthrew and so convenient.
  • Netbooks

    Netbooks
Netbooks are smaller and more portable than standard laptops. They can still perform most functions average computer users need. They are very convenient for most users and can be taken anywhere. They are very low in price. The netbook is dying off and has paved the way for the ipad. The ipad was introduced in 2010
