Each Native American family head was given 320 acres of grazing land or 160 acres of farmland. If they were single, they were given 80 acres.

The IRA ended allotment of tribal lands, which had broken apart reservations and led to serious economic and cultural impacts on tribal communities, and established a process by which lands could be restored to tribal ownership.
