Matt's Timeline of Classroom Rules and Procedures

  • Day One

    Day One
    RESPECT
The teacher shows a slideshow of their life with emphasis on family and caring. He relates those attributes to how the class should treat each other. The teacher will say how he respects them and that respect goes both ways. RULES SET-UP
Teacher has an ice melting challenge in which the fastest wins. The teacher gives rules that must be followed to win the prizes. He states that in the class there must be a set of rules as well. These rules will be developed later with their input.
  • Period: to

    First Week of School

  • Day Two

    Day Two
    Limiting Wandering Around
A lab will go on, in which, concerns about wandering are addressed as a rule. Wandering is to be limited due to safety concerns and breakage of artifacts around the room. Leaving the Room
For courtesy, the students will simply have to tell the teacher where they are going (ex.washroom) and not have to ask. The teacher may have to extinguish unreasonable requests.
  • Day Three

    Day Three
    Co-Constructed General Rules
Teacher will co construct rules with the class to give them a sense of ownership over their own behaviour and what they deem reasonable. The teacher may need to prompt so that the students arrive at certain 'must have' rules like 1. respect when others are talking 2. refrain from cell phone use unless allowed 3. bullying of any sort is unacceptable 4. inappropriate comments are not welcomed
  • Day 4

    Co-Created Consequences
The consequences will be co-created with the students, with the teacher having the ones they want as back-up suggestions if the students to do reach the appropriate ones.
If a student packs up his work early, next class they will have the whole class take them accountable for their actions. If the student is late they will have to make up time at tutorials. Addition and Revision of Rules
Some rules and consequences will need to be added and revised at a later date.
  • Day 5

    Day 5
    Parental Notification of Rules
This is sent by email or letter to all parents stating that these are the rules and guidelines created by teacher and students on how to have a successful learning environment. The class went over these rules and are in acceptance of them. They understand that failing these rules will result in the appropriate discipline action. The rules will be clearly stated so the parents will know why if their child was reprimanded.
