The Start of MALDEF
MALDEF begins to fight discrimination towards Latino's. They also start to try to involve them in the political process while denouncing racist actions by law enforcement and the court. MALDEF Draws Attention
MALDEF attorneys represent students who boycott their school district's policies. This was important for MALDEF because the public started giving them recognition. This also made them start to be known. -
Edgewood ISD V. Kirby
In 1984, MALDEF files a lawsuit because of Texas' unfair discriminatory way of school funding. In 1989 the court ruled that it was unconstitutional and there was a greater equity of school funding. This was an important part of the organization because something MALDEF specializes in is equal education and they fulfilled their purpose. -
MALDEF sues Abercrombie & Fitch
MALDEF sues a big clothing brand because of hiring practices that exclude minorities AND women. This lead to the policy being revised. This event is important because this is what MALDEF was made for. In this case, they help the discriminated minorities, which was their main purpose. -
MALDEF Ensures Education for All
MALDEF files a lawsuit in April of 2014 to make sure that children that live in poverty and are at risk gets good education. The court rules that education is a fundamental right. This is important because this is another great act by MALDEF and ensures children get their proper education so they can have a great future no matter what their funds look like. In 2018, the court sided with the plaintiffs.
