Latin revolution timeline

  • The beginning of the Haitian revolution

    In August, 100,000 enslaved Africans rose in revolt against their French masters. This led to the leader Toussaint taking charge of the bloody revolt against the settlers.
  • Toussaint's success

    He took control of all of Haiti and freed all the enslaved Africans.
  • The death of a strong leader

    Toussaint agreed to halt the revolution if the French would end slavery. Even though there was a two-sided agreement made the French still accused him of planning another uproar and they sent him to a prison in the French Alps where he died
  • Independence

    On January 1st Haiti was considered an independent country. It was the first black colony to free itself from European control
  • Venezuela's independence from Spain

    Bolivars army faced multiple defeats and twice he had to go into exile
  • The turning point

    Bolivar led 2,000 soldiers on a march through the Andes into what is now Colombia and won a decisive victory.
  • The Venezuelan independence

    Bolivar had won Venezuela's independence. He marched south into Ecuador where he found San Martin. Together they would decide the future of the Latin American revolutionary movement.
  • Mexico's Independence

    Mexico's creoles feared the loss of their privileges in the Spanish-controlled colony so they united in support of Mexico's independence Agustin de Iturbide proclaimed independence in 1821.
  • Brazilian Revolution

    Brazil was a colony under Portugal and their revolution came without violence and bloodshed. 8,000 Brazilians signed a petition asking Dom Pedro to rule. Pedro agreed and officially declared Brazil's independence.
  • Central American Independence

    Several central American states declared independence from Spain and Mexico. Iturbide who was a self-proclaimed emperor refused to recognize the declaration of independence and was later overthrown.
  • The power of Bolivar and San Martin

    San Martin and Bolivar came to an agreement. Bolivar's army went to defeat the Spanish at the battle of Ayacucho. The Spanish colonies in Latin America all gained their independence after the war.
