  • Beginning of Haitian Revolution

    The Haitian revolution was heavily influenced by ideals from the French and American Revolutions. These ideals came from the Enlightenment, such as Popular Sovereignty, equality, etc. The Haitian revolution began as a revolt from slaves and gens de colour.

    The Haitian Revolution began as a result of the introduction of Enlightenment ideals, pushing slaves, gens de colour, and maroon communities to fight for equality among French Settlers.
  • Arrival of French Troops

    In an attempt to hinder the revolts in Haiti, France sends troops over.
  • Touissant's Army

    Touissant was an intelligent former slave. He was educated and inherently skilled. In 1793, Touissant built a powerful army that would soon be a driving force in the fight against France.
  • Constitution and Success of Touissant

    Touissant already had a 20,000 man army in 1797 that controlled most of Haiti. In 1801 Touissant created a constitution that gave equality to all citizens of Haiti.
  • Declaration of Independence

    Despite Touissant being locked up, remaining generals fought the fight and Haiti declared independence in late 1803.
  • Napoleon Invading Portugal

    Napoleon invaded Portugal, leaving the royal court to flee to Rio de Janeiro. The king later returned to Portugal and left his son, Pedro, in charge of Brazil. Creoles called for independence the next year, and Pedro became Emperor Pedro I after defeating Portuguese forces in Brazil.

    From 1810-1825, the creoles led movements inspired by the political actions of America against Europe.
  • Simon Bolivar's first Fight

    Simon Bolivar first fights Spain, and succeeds nine years later.
  • Gran Colombia

    In the 1820's, Simon Bolivar attempted to unify South America as if it was the US. However, it didn't work out for long, resulting in Bolivar quitting on governing the continent.
  • Augustin de Iturbide

    Seized the capital and named himself emperor of Mexico, declaring independence from Spain. Iturbide's rule ended quickly.
  • Southern Mexico Split

    Southern Mexico split into Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica.
  • Mexico Declaring Independence

    Southern parts of Mexico declared independence, forming a Central American Federation.
  • Arrival of British and Spanish

    In an attempt to gain something from helping in Haiti, both England and Spain send troops over to subdue the chaos.
  • Creole Seize of Mexico

    Creoles took over from Iturbide and established a republic.
