Napoleon invaded Portugal, leaving the royal court to flee to Rio de Janeiro. The king later returned to Portugal and left his son, Pedro, in charge of Brazil. Creoles called for independence the next year, and Pedro became Emperor Pedro I after defeating Portuguese forces in Brazil. -
