Brazil is officially independent with a bloodless revolution
In 1822, creoles demanded Brazil's independence from Portugal. Eight thousand Brazilians signed a petition asking Dom Pedro, the king's son who stayed behind, to rule. -
Jose de San Martin and Simon Bolivar meet and agree on driving Spanish forces out of Lima, Peru.
San Martin wanted to drive Spanish forces out of Lima, Peru but he knew he needed a bigger force. In 1822, San Martin and Bolivar met in Guayaquil, Ecuador where they met an agreement and San Martin left his army in the hands of Bolivar to command. -
Central America declares absolute independence from Spain.
Iturbide refused to recognize the declaration of independence so he was overthrown. Central America (Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Costa Rica) than declared absolute independence from Mexico. -
Battle of Ayachucho (Peru)
With unified forces, the army defeat the Spanish in the Battle of Ayachucho. In this last major battle, the Spanish colonies won their freedom. Venezula, Colombia, Panama and Ecuador united into one country called Gran Colombia.
