Before the troops returned home, violence occured between the nationalists and Britain. This is becuase the troops expected Britain to fufill it's promise,but they didn't. -
British passed Rowlatt Acts
The Rowlatt Acts allowed the government to jail protestors without trial for up to 2 years. -
Amritsar Massacre
Hindu and Muslim protesters were shot down by troops. The protestors were unaware the British banned public meetings. -

The deliberate and public refusal to obey an unjust law and nonviolence as the means to achieve independence. -
Boycotts, Strikes, and Demonstrations
Gandhi ordered everyone to refuse to purchase British goods, attend schools, and pay British taxes. Thousands of Indians were arrested during these acts of disobedience. -
The Salt March
Gandhi organized the Salt Act that allowed Indians to only buy salt from the government. Gandhi and followers walked nearly 240 miles to collect salt water to create salt, they were later on arrested for this. -
Britain Grants Limited Self- Rule
Gandhi and his followers achieved greater political power for Indians when The British passed the Government of India Act which gave Indians their local government, but not full independence. -
Independence for India
It is declared that India gains full independence through Indian Independence Act which separates India and Pakistan.
